In today’s world, many Christian communities face division, often sparked by political debates. What should be simple government administration has been framed as moral crises, creating rifts among believers. It is crucial to remember that our primary focus as Christians should be the teachings of Jesus Christ, not the shifting sands of political ideology.
Political Debates vs. Eternal Truths
Under civilized conditions, political discussions can be beneficial, offering different perspectives on how to manage earthly affairs. However, when these discussions overshadow the eternal truths of Christ, they become problematic. Many have allowed political allegiances to define their faith, but the teachings of Jesus Christ should be the cornerstone of our beliefs and actions.
Jesus Himself warned that His message would bring division, not because He sought to create discord, but because the truth naturally separates those who accept it from those who do not. In Matthew 10:34-36, Jesus says:
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.”
These words remind us that the gospel is a powerful, dividing force. It challenges our deepest loyalties and calls us to place Christ above all else, even our closest relationships.
The Holy Spirit, the True Divider
It is not our role as Christians to create division; rather, we are called to speak the truth of Jesus Christ and live out His teachings. The Holy Spirit is the one who convicts hearts and rightly divides. Hebrews 4:12 emphasizes the power of God’s Word:
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
When we faithfully proclaim the gospel and live according to God’s Word, the Holy Spirit works through us, revealing the truth to those around us. Some will be drawn closer to Christ, while others may turn away. This is not a failure on our part, but the natural outcome of the gospel’s power.
Courage in the Face of Division
As Christians, we should not be intimidated by the divisions that arise when we stand for Christ. We must resist the temptation to water down the gospel in an effort to maintain unity at the expense of truth. Instead, we should be bold in our faith, trusting that God will use the division to purify His church and bring people to a deeper understanding of His will.
In Luke 12:51, Jesus further clarifies:
“Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.”
This division is not a call to be divisive but a reminder that the truth of Christ is paramount. When we prioritize Jesus above all else, the resulting division is not our doing but the work of God Himself.
