Life on earth is fleeting. It is a common for people to say, “I was young, but then I blinked, and now I am old.” The Bible is replete with metaphors that illustrate this truth. James 4:14 compares life to a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Psalm 103:15-16 describes our days as like grass, which flourishes in the morning and withers by evening.
This transient nature of life can lead us to despair or to hedonism, but as Christians, we are called to a higher understanding and purpose. Our temporary life is a precious gift meant to be lived with joy and reverence, always mindful of God’s grace.
Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 encourages us to find joy in our toil and to see our work as a gift from God. It is possible, and indeed expected, for Christians to enjoy life and its blessings. However, this enjoyment must always be in the context of honoring God and not abusing His grace.
Living with an awareness of the fleeting nature of life fosters gratitude. Each day, each moment, and each breath is a gift. Cultivating a heart of thankfulness helps us to cherish the small blessings and find contentment in God’s provision.
Recognizing life’s brevity should propel us towards purposeful living. Ephesians 5:15-16 urges us to be careful how we live, making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil. Every day is an opportunity to reflect God’s love, serve others, and grow in our faith.
But with all that said, it is important to remember that enjoying life does not mean indulging in excess. Romans 6:1-2 warns against continuing in sin under the pretext of grace. True joy is found in living within the boundaries set by God, which protect us from the harm and emptiness of a sinful life.
Finally, to enjoy life while honoring God is to find a balance between joy and reverence. We are to rejoice in the beauty of creation, the love of family and friends, and the work of our hands. Simultaneously, we must live in a manner that reflects our reverence for God, acknowledging His sovereignty and grace.
