Resting In The Lord

Resting In The Lord

As we plan out our lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the never-ending to-do lists, commitments, and responsibilities. From juggling work demands to family obligations and even ministry endeavors, our lives often resemble the frantic pace of Martha, bustling around, trying to get everything done. But in the midst of our busyness, are we neglecting the one thing that truly matters – resting in the presence of the Lord?

In the Gospel of Luke, we encounter a poignant scene where Jesus visits the home of Martha and Mary. Martha, eager to serve her honored guest, is busy preparing and fussing over the details of hospitality. Meanwhile, Mary chooses a different path. Instead of joining her sister in the kitchen, Mary sits at the feet of Jesus, hanging onto His every word.

Martha’s frustration boils over as she sees Mary’s apparent idleness. She appeals to Jesus, asking Him to instruct Mary to help her with the chores. But Jesus responds with gentle correction, saying, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42, NIV).

In this simple yet profound exchange, Jesus highlights the importance of choosing the better portion – the act of resting in His presence. It’s not that serving and tending to practical matters are unimportant. Rather, Jesus emphasizes that prioritizing intimate communion with Him is paramount.

Likewise, in our own lives, we often find ourselves pulled in multiple directions. We may be serving tirelessly in various capacities – whether it’s within our families, workplaces, or churches. And while these endeavors may be noble and necessary, we must be vigilant not to let them overshadow our relationship with the Lord.

The danger of busyness is that it can lead to spiritual neglect. When we are constantly on the go, rushing from one task to another, our souls can become parched and weary. We may find ourselves spiritually malnourished, craving the sustenance that can only be found in the presence of God.

Jesus invites us to follow Mary’s example – to sit at His feet, to listen to His voice, and to find rest for our souls. In the midst of our hectic schedules and endless obligations, He beckons us to come away and spend time with Him. It is in those moments of quiet communion that we are refreshed, renewed, and refocused on what truly matters.

Resting in the Lord is not just a luxury reserved for the spiritually elite; it is a vital necessity for every believer. It is in those moments of stillness and surrender that we are strengthened, empowered, and equipped to face the challenges of life with grace and resilience.

So let us heed the words of Jesus and choose the better portion. Let us prioritize our relationship with Him above all else, knowing that in His presence, there is fullness of joy and eternal satisfaction. May we find rest for our souls as we abide in Him, trusting that He will sustain us and lead us in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
