Light Of The World

Light Of The World

During Jesus’s earthly ministry, He described a few characteristics of the world. But what he focused on more was describing the characteristics of Christians to the world. In John 8:12, Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” This statement encapsulates not only His identity but also the role and calling of every believer.

As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect His light in a world engulfed in darkness. It’s easy to get caught up in the negativity, the deceit, and the wickedness that seem to pervade society. But Jesus didn’t commission us to blend in with the darkness; He commissioned us to shine brightly, illuminating the path for others to see.

In Matthew 10:16, Jesus instructs His disciples, saying, “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” This verse reminds us of the delicate balance we must maintain as Christians. We are called to be gentle and pure in heart like doves, yet shrewd and discerning like serpents when navigating the complexities of the world.

It’s crucial for us, as Christians, to focus on displaying the characteristics of the kingdom of God rather than getting entangled in the wicked characteristics of the world. Galatians 5:22-23 outlines these characteristics: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things, there is no law.” These fruits serve as a benchmark for our conduct and demeanor as representatives of Christ.

Moreover, Romans 12:21 exhorts us, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” This verse reminds us that our response to the darkness around us shouldn’t be to retaliate with more darkness but to combat it with the light of Christ. We are called to love our enemies, bless those who curse us, do good to those who hate us, and pray for those who spitefully use us (Matthew 5:44).

It’s understandable to feel discouraged at times when confronted with the pervasive darkness of the world. However, we must remember that our hope is not in the fleeting circumstances of this world but in the eternal promises of God. Philippians 2:15 encourages us to “shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life.” Our perseverance in displaying the characteristics of Christ serves as a beacon of hope to those who are lost and searching for truth.
