In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to get caught up in our daily routines, obligations, and ambitions. We often find ourselves chasing after success, wealth, and recognition, sometimes forgetting the most precious gifts we’ve been given: the relationships in our lives. As Christians, we are called to a life of love, compassion, and community, cherishing those around us as reflections of God’s love and grace.
In the book of Psalms, King David writes, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12, NIV). These words hold profound truth, reminding us of the brevity of life and the importance of making each day count. By numbering our days, we acknowledge the finite nature of our existence on this earth and recognize the significance of every moment we have been given.
The concept of numbering our days is not meant to instill fear or anxiety but to inspire us to live with intentionality and purpose. When we realize that our time on earth is limited, we are prompted to prioritize the things that truly matter, and chief among them are the relationships we cultivate with others.
Death is an inevitable part of life, and while it may seem morbid to dwell on, it serves as a poignant reminder of the preciousness of life and the urgency to cherish our loved ones. None of us knows how many days we have left, but what we do know is that each day is an opportunity to love, to forgive, to encourage, and to build meaningful connections with those around us.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells his disciples, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34, NIV). This commandment underscores the importance of relationships in the Christian faith. Our love for others should mirror the selfless and sacrificial love that Christ demonstrated during his time on earth.
When we take the time to appreciate the relationships in our lives, we honor God’s design for community and fellowship. Whether it’s our family members, friends, colleagues, or neighbors, each person we encounter has been placed in our lives for a purpose. They are not merely incidental but integral to our journey of faith and personal growth.
So, let us heed the wisdom found in Psalm 90:12 and number our days wisely. Let us invest our time and energy into nurturing the relationships that bring joy, comfort, and strength to our lives. Let us love wholeheartedly, forgive generously, and cherish every moment we have been given with those we hold dear.
