Seeking Wisdom

Seeking Wisdom

There are many things we can ask for from God. “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” – Matthew 7:7 (ESV). With so many options, what is the ultimate thing that we as Christians should ask for?

In the book of James, we are encouraged to ask God for wisdom: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (James 1:5 ESV). This passage reminds us that wisdom is not something we can attain solely through our own efforts or intellect. It is a gift from God, freely given to those who seek it with sincere hearts.

One of the most compelling examples of this truth is found in the story of King Solomon. In 1 Kings chapter 3, we find Solomon at the beginning of his reign as king of Israel. In a remarkable display of humility and dependence on God, Solomon approached the Lord with a request: “Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” (1 Kings 3:9 ESV).

What’s remarkable about Solomon’s request is the context in which it was made. God, impressed by Solomon’s humility and desire for wisdom, had granted him a remarkable offer: “Ask what I shall give you” (1 Kings 3:5 ESV). Here was an opportunity for Solomon to request anything his heart desired—wealth, power, fame. Yet, instead of asking for material possessions or personal gain, Solomon chose wisdom.

Solomon’s choice reveals a profound understanding of the value of wisdom and its significance in governing God’s people. He recognized that true success and prosperity stem not from earthly treasures, but from the wisdom to discern God’s will and lead His people according to His purposes.

And how did God respond to Solomon’s request? With overwhelming generosity and blessing. God not only granted Solomon the wisdom he asked for but also promised to give him riches, honor, and long life, surpassing any earthly king before or after him (1 Kings 3:13-14).

The story of Solomon reminds us that wisdom is more valuable than any material possession or worldly achievement. It is the key to unlocking God’s blessings and fulfilling His purposes in our lives. When we prioritize seeking wisdom through prayer and humble dependence on God, He is faithful to bless us abundantly, just as He did with Solomon.

Moreover, Solomon’s reign itself became a testament to the power of wisdom. Under his leadership, Israel experienced a period of unprecedented prosperity, peace, and influence. People from all over the world marveled at Solomon’s wisdom and sought his counsel (1 Kings 10:24).

As Christians, we are called to follow in Solomon’s footsteps—to seek wisdom above all else and to trust in God’s provision and guidance. Like Solomon, may we approach God with humble hearts, recognizing our need for His wisdom in every aspect of our lives. And may we, too, experience the abundant blessings that come from seeking wisdom and walking in obedience to God’s will.
