1 Corinthians 2:2

1 Corinthians 2:2

In this brave internet age, where information and opinions flow freely everywhere, it’s easy for Christians to get distracted by “new discoveries” and “documentaries” about Jesus and the Christian faith. But this phenomenon is nothing new. Even in the first century, the early Christians faced a barrage of conflicting teachings and ideologies. False prophets and misleading philosophies sought to draw them away from the simplicity and truth found in Christ.

Fast forward to the present day, and the challenge has only intensified. With the advent of technology and the proliferation of social media, we are bombarded with an overwhelming influx of information, much of it contradictory and often misleading.

Scripture warns us that the devil prowls like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). One of his primary tactics is to sow seeds of doubt and confusion by distorting the truth about Christ. Through various mediums, including books, movies, social media, and even well-intentioned but misguided teachings, the enemy attempts to lead Christians astray and dilute the purity of the Gospel message.

In such a climate, it’s imperative for Christians to exercise discernment and vigilance. “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2, NIV). We must filter everything through the lens of Scripture and hold fast to the unchanging truth of God’s Word. This requires a deep and intimate knowledge of who Christ is, as revealed in the Bible. Just as a bank teller learns to identify counterfeit currency by studying genuine bills, we can recognize falsehoods by immersing ourselves in the truth of God’s Word.

Our ultimate allegiance must be to Christ alone. He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). Amidst the noise and distractions of the world, we must fix our eyes on Jesus, the author, and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). This means prioritizing time in prayer, worship, and study of Scripture. It means cultivating a heart that is sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and obedient to God’s commands.

Furthermore, we must resist the temptation to add to or subtract from the Word of God. The Bible is complete and sufficient for all matters pertaining to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). Any teaching or doctrine that deviates from the Scriptures is to be rejected outright. As the apostle Paul exhorted the Galatians, “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8).

Brothers and Sisters, let us heed the words of Paul and endeavor to know nothing among us except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. May we resist the deceptive tactics of the enemy by staying grounded in the truth of God’s Word. And may our lives be a testimony to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord (Philippians 3:8).

Amen.
