Birds and Flowers

Birds and Flowers

Every now and then, it is nice to remember God’s reminder that he will always take care of our needs.

In a world filled with uncertainty and constant change, it’s easy to find ourselves consumed by worry and anxiety about our personal resources and the future. As Christians, we’re not immune to these feelings, but we are called to approach life with a different perspective—one rooted in faith and trust in our heavenly Father.

One of the most comforting passages in the Bible that speaks directly to our concerns about material needs is found in the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus speaks to His disciples about the birds of the air and the lilies of the field:

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:25-33, ESV)

These words from Jesus are a powerful reminder of God’s provision and care for His children. He uses the examples of the birds and the flowers to illustrate His point—these simple creatures neither worry nor strive, yet God provides for their needs abundantly. If our heavenly Father cares for them, how much more will He care for us, who are created in His image and dearly loved?

It’s essential for us as believers to internalize this truth and allow it to transform our perspective on life. Instead of being consumed by worry and anxiety, we are called to trust in God’s unfailing provision. That doesn’t mean we sit idly by and expect everything to be handed to us on a silver platter. Rather, it means we work diligently, stewarding the resources and opportunities God has given us while simultaneously trusting Him to meet our needs according to His perfect timing and wisdom.

When we prioritize seeking God’s kingdom and His righteousness above all else, we align ourselves with His will and open ourselves up to His abundant blessings. This doesn’t guarantee a life free from challenges or hardships, but it does promise that God will walk alongside us through every trial, providing the strength, wisdom, and provision we need to overcome.

Amen.
