There are moments in life when we feel utterly alone, as if we’re navigating through the stormy seas of existence all by ourselves. It’s during these times of solitude and struggle that we may question whether anyone truly understands our pain or comprehends the depth of our despair. However, as Christians, we are blessed with a profound truth that transcends our feelings of isolation: we are never alone.
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus imparts a timeless promise to His disciples, one that echoes through the corridors of time to reach our hearts today: “I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20b, NLT). These words, spoken by the Savior Himself, offer reassurance and hope to every believer who has ever felt abandoned or forsaken.
But what does it truly mean to have Jesus with us always? How can we reconcile the reality of His spiritual presence with the tangible challenges we face in our daily lives?
First and foremost, we must recognize that Jesus’ promise is not dependent upon our circumstances or emotions. It transcends the temporal realm and encompasses every aspect of our existence. When we feel overwhelmed by the weight of our burdens, Jesus is there, offering His strength to sustain us. When we grapple with doubt and uncertainty, Jesus is there, gently guiding us back to the path of faith. And when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, Jesus is there, comforting us with the assurance of His eternal presence.
Moreover, Jesus’ promise of companionship extends beyond mere proximity; it embodies the essence of His divine nature. As the omnipresent God, Jesus is not bound by the limitations of time or space. He is ever-present, transcending the boundaries of human comprehension and enveloping us in His boundless love. In fact, it is in these moments of deep despair that He is closest to us. Psalm 34:18 (NIV): “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
In moments of solitude and silence, when the world seems to fade away and our hearts cry out in desperation, Jesus draws near to us with arms outstretched, ready to embrace us with His grace and mercy. He whispers words of comfort and peace, reminding us that we are cherished beyond measure and that our struggles do not define us.
